BESS (Battery Energy Storage System)

Energy storage systems become more and more important in the energy transition, especially to balance the supply and demand of electrical energy. They can store energy, often generated in a renewable way, for a shorter or longer period in order to use the energy at a later moment.

Depending on the storage period there are many different ways to store the energy. For very short storage, you can use so called super capacitors or fly wheels. And for longer periods of weeks or months hydropower, hydrogen or compressed air are used.

For periods in the magnitude of hours and days currently the most suitable technique are batteries, based on lead acid, nickel cadmium or lithium ion. So-called redox flow batteries come up as well now, in which the electrolytes are in fact fluids.

BESS in the Oil & Gas sector

An important application of a battery energy storage system is in the oil and gas industry, where large gas turbines or engines are being used to generate power for all kinds of processes, offshore or onshore. In this case a BESS can replace one of the gas driven power generators and/or eliminate the need for back up diesel gensets. It will in fact act as  a peak shaver for the remaining gas generators. This will not only reduce the cost of maintenance and fuel gas drastically, but will also contribute considerably to the decarbonization of the industrial processes of your plant.

Multiple other applications

Other applications of battery energy storage systems are congestion management, the monetization of daily power imbalances, frequency response, the use of BESS in standalone off-grid microgrids or mobile power applications, for example at outdoor events and construction sites.

VONK and BESS

Whatever the application is, the energy management system which monitors battery state and the charging-discharging process is a crucial part of the system. And it is especially this energy management system, or also called battery management system, where we as VONK make a difference and can add real value.

We are able to select and build the best fitting battery energy management system, including the most suited converter technology, for all kinds of applications, up to MWh scale. Furthermore, the type of battery is carefully selected, such that energy can be stored and discharged in the optimal way, both technically and cost-effectively.

We always strive to offer the best fitting overall energy storage solution, taking into consideration required battery capacity, rated power and speed of charging and discharging. Next to this, safety, reliability and environmental conditions are considered as well, and of course the costs.

VONK can install the BESS in existing building or deliver it as a fully containerized plug-and-play solution. This we can do for all kinds of onshore applications, as well as offshore on O&G platforms.

BESS as part of VONK’s containerised Hybrid Power Systems

BESS plays an essential part in VONK’s smart Hybrid Power Systems. Power which is generated by renewables or the back-up diesel generator, if present, is offered to the VONK power management system, which will distribute it to the energy consuming application(s). Excess generated power is stored in batteries to be used later, when not enough power is being generated, e.g. during the night or days when it is windstill. The battery systems used in VONK’s HPS are selected in such a way that energy can be optimally stored and discharged both technically and cost-effectively. We always strive to offer the best fitting solution, taking into consideration all essential aspects, such as required battery capacity, rated power, speed of charge/discharge, safety, reliability, lifetime, environmental conditions and, of course, cost.
