Energy Storage Systems (ESS)
In the Energy Transition the storage of energy becomes increasingly important, mainly due to the intermittent character of renewables such as solar, wind and wave. When it comes to energy storage in batteries, VONK has meanwhile built up vast experience with onshore and offshore applications with different battery types (Lead Acid, NiCd, NaS, Li-ion etc) of different capacities and power ratings. VONK builds micro-grids with ESS systems not only for offshore applications but also for trading of energy to the main grid.
Besides trade, the ESS is equipped with a module that can be used for frequency control, the Frequency Restoration Reserve (FRR). The FRR can be used for the correction of real-time power imbalance. In this way we can utilize the stored energy for fast-charging cars and have capacity available for FFR.
ESS as part of VONK’s containerised Hybrid Power Systems
ESS plays an essential part in VONK’s smart Hybrid Power Systems. Power which is generated by renewables or the back-up diesel generator, if present, is offered to the VONK power management system, which will distribute it to the energy consuming application(s). Excess generated power is stored in batteries to be used later, when not enough power is being generated, e.g. during the night or days when it is windstill. The battery systems used in VONK’s HPS are selected in such a way that energy can be optimally stored and discharged both technically and cost-effectively. We always strive to offer the best fitting solution, taking into consideration all essential aspects, such as required battery capacity, rated power, speed of charge/discharge, safety, reliability, lifetime, environmental conditions and, of course, cost.
