A 140MW converter for the Max Planck Institute in Garching (DE). The ASDEX Upgrade facility is one of the world’s leading nuclear fusion research centers and the predecessor to the future ITER site. Within its Tokamak reactor, plasma of hydrogen and deuterium floats inside a magnetic field at 100 million degrees Celsius. The power supply consists of four identical converters, each capable of achieving a maximum of 1300V and 45kA, and they can be operated in multiple configurations, reaching 140MW VDC. Vonk’s scope includes the transformer, converters, switchgear, cooling systems, and bus ducts.
